Designed by Millie O' Grady
Hi, my name is Millie O'Grady and I joined CanTeen as a sibling member when my youngest sister Bridget was diagnosed with Leukemia in December 2007. I am currently the President of the CanTeen Canterbury/West Coast branch.
Watching my little sister go through treatment was one of the hardest things I've had to endure. The really hard part was knowing there was nothing I could do to ease her pain. You quickly learn to treasure every moment, learn the true power of a smile and the reassurance of a hug. I had no idea how much it was affecting me, but CanTeen was there to support me in every way.
I continue to make incredible friendships, gain leadership skills and experience the most amazing opportunities through CanTeen. To me, CanTeen is more than a support network; it's a part of my life. I wouldn't be who I am today if it wasn't for CanTeen. I have truly learnt to live life.
I learnt to surf at a CanTeen monthly activity, it was such an awesome experience, and I know many Kiwi's love to surf during the summer, hence the theme of my design. I also incorporated a Māori theme into the shape of New Zealand as it is a part of who we are.
Designed by Munrith Longe
My name is Munrith Longe and at the age of 14, I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour called Craniopharyngioma. Though I live with constant pain (a side-effect of my surgery and radiotherapy), I appreciate the second opportunity handed to me. Plus without my life-changing experience, I wouldn't have met CanTeen.
CanTeen is a remarkable organiaation. When I felt nothing was "going" for me, CanTeen 'picked' me up.
CanTeen has helped me 'live life' and 'keep moving on'.
Never in my life did I expect to be diagnosed with a brain tumour - but when I was, CanTeen was and still is by my side.
My design this year was again inspired by CanTeen. The candy canes depict us CanTeeners'- being held by our angel "CanTeen". The colour and pearly lights accentuates the joy, peace and fun Christmas brings to all of us.
Wishing you a blessed Christmas & wonderful Years to come.
All Things Christmas
Designed by Rachel Allan
Hi I'm Rachel Allan, I joined CanTeen when my brother Ben was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour at the end of 2007. Unfortunately after a short brave battle Ben passed away in January 2010.
The transition from having a wonderful big brother, to being an only child has been the hardest part, however CanTeen has been the best support I could ever ask for.
I have never felt more understood and accepted than when I am at CanTeen. The underlying knowledge that we have all 'been there, done that' makes CanTeen a safe place to be yourself. I have learnt so much about myself and wouldn't be the person I am today without CanTeen. I never thought it was possible to laugh as much as we do at CanTeen.
My Christmas card includes all the things that I believe make a perfect summer-time Christmas in Aoateroa, with a few Kiwi icons thrown in there of course.
Manuka Christmas Tree
Designed by Rosa Cameron
I'm Rosa Cameron, am 20 years of age and live in Dunedin.
On Christmas Eve in 2011 my brother was diagnosed with cancer at age 22. It made for a pretty rough Christmas, even though we have a huge hilarious family and Christmas is usually pretty choice.
Cancer sucks. It sucks even more when you're a young adult, which is why it's awesome that CanTeen exists to provide a support network for patients and their siblings. As a sibling you go through your own personal cancer experience and CanTeen recognises that. I've come to realise its normal to be related to someone who has cancer and there are so many of us out there. CanTeen cultivates a positive environment, which I think is really important.
My design depicts our family Christmas tree as it's always manuka and really beautiful.
Kiwi Summer Holiday
Designed by Hannah Josephson
My name's Hannah Josephson and I was diagnosed with a brain tumour ten days before my 11th birthday. I underwent surgery and chemotherapy over a period of two years and as a result suffered side effects such as blindness and permanent hair loss.
However, cancer hasn't stopped me living my life - I finished school and am currently studying for a certificate as a child counsellor at Starship Hospital.
I have been with CanTeen since 2004 (am now 21), and as a result have made wonderful friends. CanTeen is a place to go where you can meet, talk and share your experience with other people who are in the same position. CanTeen is a place where we are one family.
What sums up a kiwi Christmas to me? Well the Kiwi itself, Christmas hats, and spending summer spent our beautiful New Zealand beaches.
